February is packed with interesting days to celebrate and learn about, and we are lucky enough to have one extra day because 2020 is a leap year!
Career & Technical Education
It’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) month! CTE Departments celebrate the value of CTE, achievements and accomplishments of programs across the country. CTE doesn’t focus exclusively on manufacturing or other blue collar careers. It covers many different fields, including health care, information technology (IT), advanced manufacturing, hospitality and management and many more. Looking to have your students explore careers, check out Career One Stop.
Future Business Leaders of America students are hosting a Career Day in the Media Center. Representatives from local businesses, the Military, Chartway Credit Union and two and four year colleges: Tidewater Community College, ECPI, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University and many others will be distributing application, scholarship, recruitment information while answering questions about summer internships and jobs.
Collaborating with one of our local elementary schools, as part of Digital Learning Day February 27th, some of our students will be facilitating a Merge Cube activity to 4th and 5th students.

African American History Resources
There are so many opportunities to collaborate this month.
The American Archive of Public Broadcasting in conjunction with the Library of Congress contains more than 50,00 hours of digitized public broadcasting programs. Scroll through special collections to find video taped interviews, and news casts such as The Freedaom Rider Interviews, Africans in America Interviews, The Abolitionists interviews, and Murder of Emmett Till Interviews and many more.

And an even larger collection of videos, images and recordings is located at the archives of the LOC. I included the audio and video link, but there are also so many photos and documents.

The History Channel has a good collection of photos and videos accompanied by articles.

Valentine’s Day
Some of the best STEM activities are on Pinterest. Even the Smithsonian has a Valentine’s Day board full of science-themed activities https://ssec.si.edu/stemvisions-blog/valentines-day-science
Here are some nerdy science valentines from the Franklin Institute. They could be adapted by any STEM classes and then displayed outside the room. We are planning to put up a display of “Good Chemistry” with science and romance novels. https://www.fi.edu/nerdy-valentines

CBS News tells us about leap years in a 5 minute segment that includes a 100 year old woman having her 25th birthday, man on the street leap year interviews and an explanation from Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist, and excellent explainer of all things science.
