November goes quickly, with days off for Election Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day, so we had to squeeze in a lot in the little time we had.
Engineering Community Lunch-N-Learn
The Library hosted the Girls In Engineering Program’s Lunch-N-Learn. Members of the program made a presentation to members from the Community, School Board and Administration. Then, everyone ate lunch together where the students got to hear about the attendees’ career paths. Lunch was catered by our school’s Culinary II students.
Lisa & Deborah will be presenting at the International Technology & Engineering Educators Association Conference March 2019 in Kansas City, MO.

Teachers’ Book Discussion
In a collaboration with the English Department, the library hosted a group of teachers from different departments to discuss The Hate U Give , a book that many of our students read in their literature circles, and many more have seen on the big screen. It was re-energizing at the end of the day to share our thoughts about the book we and our students read.

Finding good discussion questions online was quick and easy, so the prep was not difficult. One of our teachers, Cabrillya Wallace went to UVA with the woman who created the cover art, and she prepared a short PowerPoint about the design artist and how she was asked to create the cover. See resources for more information.
We hope to meet a few more times this year to discuss books in different genres that our kids are reading. We already have suggestions from our teachers for the next book. More later.
We were able to give our teachers an hour and 1/2 of professional development for their time.

Mapping Our Travels
Last month, we posted a survey in Google Forms on the library website as part of the collaboration with CTE (GIS) and Social Studies (Geography Week) which told us that 51 percent of our students were born in our state. Most of them have stayed in the USA, but we did have a number of adventurers who travelled everywhere from China to Paris and even Yemen. Our kids “mapped out” this information, and some students did quick virtual visits to some of the exotic places on the map. Resources in the November blog.

December is our Holiday Month
December starts off with Computer Science Week (December 3-9) which includes the Hour of Code To ensure all students have an opportunity to participate in the Hour of Code, members of the Computer Science Honor Society will be facilitating an Hour of Code and Unplugged coding activities during lunch time.
Coding in the Art Department
In the spirit of making connections with coding, April Taylor Martin in our Art Department has just completed an amazing project which required her students to create their own alphabet (code) and then create their initials by cutting and assembling many layers of cardboard, turning 2D to 3D. They then combined the letters into a free-standing sculpture using the Mortise and Tenon construction method. Finally, a Zentangle design which reflects something about their personality was created and applied in a final paper mache layer, creating a symbol.

Holiday Activities
Digital Snowflakes
Want those beautiful snowflakes without the mess to clean up? Use a digital snowflake maker from Rectangle World. Use the pointer to cut away the closed shapes which represent scissor cuts on the digital paper folded for you, and when you are finished, click make snowflake. Your beautiful paper snowflake will appear, and you can save the image to your computer, or reset to start all over. You can choose from 6 colors for your background.
If you have 3D glasses, try this site, Nice Random Snowflake Generator. It generates the snowflakes and you enjoy them. The site works with or without the glasses. Click the glasses image to switch the 3D view. No expensive glasses needed. The paper 3D glasses work.
Polar Bear Sightings
Who doesn’t want to see polar bears at this time of the year? Explore.org has live video cams. The bears have just migrated to their winter hunts, but you can see the highlights of this season. Scroll down to choose other highlights. So cute.
